How does this simulator work?
This simulator computes the local circumstances of the August 12, 2026 solar eclipse for any city or geographic position, using published NASA Besselian elements. It shows the real position of the Sun and Moon in the sky, second by second, along with the percentage of the Sun obscured and the exact time of maximum eclipse.
Across Europe outside the path of totality, the eclipse will be partial: London 91%, Dublin 94%, Berlin around 84%, and a deep partial eclipse of 89โ98% across France in the evening, low over the western horizon. In North America, only a small partial eclipse is visible around midday โ New York around 9%.
The path of totality crosses Arctic Russia, Greenland, Iceland and then northern Spain at sunset โ the first total solar eclipse visible from continental Europe since August 11, 1999. Watch out: Madrid and Barcelona reach 99.9% obscuration but sit just outside the path, so the eclipse is never total there.

Why is the Sun so low in the animation?
Across much of Europe the eclipse happens late in the day: in France, for instance, the Sun is only 2โ12ยฐ above the western horizon at maximum, and sets before the eclipse ends in the eastern part of the country.
How is this different from the interactive map?
The simulator focuses on one city or location with a sky animation; the interactive map shows the path of totality and obscuration lines across the whole of Europe.
